On Sunday the 27th of September, for the first time in NFL history three women were on the field at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio.
In this regular-season game between the Cleveland Browns and the Washington Football Team, There was a female coach on both sidelines and a female official calling the game. Callie Brownson was hired in January of 2020 as the Browns’ chief of staff, Jennifer King is a full-year coaching intern with the Washington Football team and this is Sarah Thomas’ 5th year as an NFL official.
Breaking the glass ceiling is something these three women are experts at.
Callie Brownson was the first full-time female coach at a Division one football team. In 2018 Brownson was hired as the offensive quality control coach at Dartmouth.
Jennifer King also coached at Dartmouth before making her way to the NFL. She was the offensive assistant while in New Hampshire. King also has experience playing as well. She was a quarterback and receiver on the Carolina Phoenix Women’s Football Alliance team from 2006-2017. During her 11 year career with the Phoenix, she earned seven All-American honors and a wealth of experience of knowledge for the game of football.
Sarah Thomas previously broke the glass ceiling in college football as the first woman to officiate a college football game, a bowl game, and also a game in a Big Ten stadium. In April of 2015, Thomas was hired and became the NFL’s first full-time female official. The sky's the limit for these women as they have already broken through the ceiling that is the male-dominated National Football League.
